Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is recognized as one of the rare, unqualified treasures of American dance and culture, based in New York City and each year touring the country and world, to great acclaim.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater stands among the world’s most cherished dance companies, renowned for both its brilliant artistry and passionate energy. It has grown from a legendary March 1958 New York performance at the 92nd Street Y, led by choreographer Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American dancers, to an artistic, cultural and educational organization with a mission to continue to alter the perception of American dance, celebrate the African-American experience, and enrich modern dance globally. The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater’s companies have thus far performed for an estimated 25 million people in 48 states within the United States and in 71 countries, on 6 continents.
In 2008, a US Congressional resolution designated the Theater “a cultural ambassador to the world” and “a true pioneer in the world of dance by establishing an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs to all people while using the beauty and humanity of African-American heritage and other cultures to unite people.”
